¡Bienvenidos y bienvenidas! (Welcome!)

In this Spanish course, you will learn basic vocabulary to talk about yourself and your everyday life, in the present, in the future and in the past, in simple and brief communication situations. You will learn expressions of time, how to express things that will happen in the future, vocabulary related to the shopping list, how to express an opinion, talking about your health, and about experiences and activities that happened in the past. At the end of the course you will be able to communicate in everyday situations according to the A2 proficiency level (elementary) as described in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ​​(CEFRL, Council of Europe).

The course, which is designed for English speakers, offers a variety of exercises after going through the stages of content presentation, comprehension and production. You have videos, small texts and audios to improve your pronunciation, glossaries, activities for oral practice with other course students, quizzes, grammar cards and recommendations on external Internet resources to continue learning more and more Spanish.

The topics on which the activities revolve are work life, family life, city life and outdoor life. As you can see, a bit of everything to be able talk about yourself and to engage in everyday communication.

Syllabus

Unit 1: Mañana voy a empezar a estudiar español

This Unit includes practice in expressing actions that will take place in the future, describing every day chores, formulating questions, and learning to use time expressions.

Unit 2: ¿Qué tal tu día?

This Unit includes practice in describing our daily lives, asking questions about others, expressing preferences, and saying whether or not we liked something.

Unit 3: ¿Qué haces mañana?

This Unit includes practice in describing how we feel, parts of the body, speaking on the phone, inviting someone to do something, and arranging to meet someone.

Unit 4: ¿Dónde pasaste las vacaciones?

This Unit includes practice in using the past indefinite verb tense, describing what we did the previous day, describing how we spent the weekend, talking about our friends and explaining what they did, and talking about the holidays.

    Thank you to the University of Valencia for putting out these beginner Spanish courses! I have taken all 3 during quarantine, and along with some of my own studying on the side, I feel like I have learned a lot of the basics of Spanish. The only thing I would change about this particular course was the parts of it that were repeated verbatim from the second course. I did not mind reviewing the grammar topics, but I would have liked to perhaps practice them in different contexts. The best part of this course was the videos and the extensive practice with the past tense. Gracias para este curso; yo aprendí mucho!

    I have a relatively high level of Spanish, so this was just a refresher for me, but it was a very good course for going over the basics.

    As someone who grew up learning Spanish at a Spanish-immersion elementary school, and at home with my mother who is from Mexico, I really wanted to find a course that helped me not so much with basic vocabulary, but with actual sentence structure and grammar, and I think this course definitely provided that. It was nice to have writing, reading, and listening opportunities as that helped the course to be more well rounded. I would definitely recommend this course to those who are looking to further their Spanish grammar skills as though this course does not cover all aspects of grammar, it does offer a concise and helpful basic overview.

    This course has been very interesting. It helped me learn Spanish with an innovative and useful method! I recommend this course to all people who want to learn without getting bored. In particular, I started Spanish's lessons because I wanted to learn Spanish, as it has always fascinated me and I found this course which meets all the requirements I was looking for! It has been a clear and easily accessible course and I learnt by playing! Teachers have been fantastic with their useful videos to improve Spanish’s grammar! Great job! Thak you so much!     I really enjoyed this online course because of clear explanations, numerous exercises, videos - and general course flow. I have been studying Spanish in Prague for four months and really needed to revise and practice what I have learnt in the classroom. This course reinforced what I kind of knew - and gave me more confidence in the classroom.

    ¡Gracias! I enjoyed this course very much, and I feel like I learned a lot, in the context of how Spanish speaking people live and relate to each other. The many grammar exercises were challenging, and made me focus on correct ways to write and speak. I especially enjoyed the Nat King Cole song "Quizás, Quizás, Quizás," and the lively and interesting videos, followed by questions about what we had seen and heard. You chose well for our level of learning.

    Thank you, too, for providing links to other learning resources. I am following DuoLingo at the same time, and finding it complements what I learned in this course.

    'Spanish 3: Getting there' is very well structured, with many helpful tools for beginners. The only thing is that when completing the course the learner should receive their certificate immediately and in my case that didn't happen. The button wasn't working properly. So there's still room for improvement.

    I really enjoyed the course and have learned so much in only six months.
    I have been practising with my Spanish-speaking friends and they're amazed on how much I learn in six months period.

    This is a great course in beginning Spanish (A1-A2) that would give you an excellent review of the basic conversation and sentence structure, the daily routine of life, and several expressions as they are used in Spain. The only suggestion I have for the curriculum developers is to make sure the videos in PART 4 are correctly linked to the YOUTUBE link. The last one: Weekend in Madrid was incorrectly linked to the previous video. Thank you for this great course.

    I am from India. It was my first course on edX and also first foreign language course. I am happy about my decision. I am thankful to the instructors of the course for designing and conducting this course. The videos and related audio exercises really helped in improving pronunciation, which is very important for non-native Spanish-speakers. Looking forward to improve my Spanish basics and reaching B1/B2 level.

    I had quite a little knowledge of the Spanish language but was very interested. The course helped me so much and I found it really amazing. All the lecturers did great. I just wished students were still able to communicate with each other directly like before on Google Hangout. I had to take notes because the content is great for a beginner like me. I hoped the Basic Spanish Part 3 exam was a little more tasking though. Gracias por este curso!

    It was difficult and fun as well.

    The videos were authentic linguistically in language, speed of verbiage, and accents. It needed several reviews to catch the words.

    The continuous introduction of new and unknown words kept things challenging and interesting as the process became more advanced.

    Thanks for making this class available. I will try the medical spanish once I digest this material better. Gracias mucho.

    I have enjoyed this class very much. I took the other 2 Spanish courses and I am able to understand so much more of the language. However, I felt as though the 2nd course ended rather abruptly and it took a bit of time to get into the 3rd one. By taking these courses, I was introduced to DUO. I use it daily on either the computer or phone. Very easy to download. I give thumbs up for all of the classes !!
